DIY Gift Bag Wall Art [+Gold Corner Frame]

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

Hi! I am so so SO excited to share one of my most creative DIY projects yet!

Back story: The other day my co-workers and I decided a trip to Target over lunch was just what was needed (Target is my 'happy place'). As I was walking through the aisles this gift bag caught my eye. Immediately I knew I had to buy it and find a way to transform it.

I absolutely love this pattern! It reminds me of one of Caitlin Wilson's designs (See below)!

Anyway, I knew immediately what I wanted to do with this bag and that was turn it into wall art! My guest bedroom literally had zero art on the walls and I knew this was just what it needed. However, I also wanted it to pop on the wall and wasn't finding any frames that I liked at a decent price (enter DIY Goddess) so I decided to make my own! So this post will feature two parts.

Let's get started transforming this gift bag and frames!

{Part I} DIY Gift Bag Wall Art

Step 1: Cut out 'template'
I was lucky that the frames I chose ($12 on sale at Hobby Lobby) came with a paper inside that I could cut to use as a template on the gift bag so I first cut that out (no need to be extremely careful since it is just a guide).

Loving my new gold scissors!

Step 2: Choose pattern
I then placed the template on different sections of the gift bag to see which parts I wanted displayed.

Once I had decided I started to cut.

I then placed it behind the matting that was provided with the frame to make sure I liked the layout.

{Part II} DIY Gold Corner Frames

As I was browsing the aisles of Hobby Lobby I came across a piece of wall art in a frame with gold corners and I knew that would be the perfect frame for my new gift bag prints but I didn't just want to buy them... I wanted to make them! Let's get started!

Step 1: Take frames apart
This is kind of a given but I was getting picture crazy so I figured I'd include it. Luckily these frames came all the way apart which made painting them super easy!

Step 2: Tape off frame
I started by measuring roughly 4 inches from each corner on each side and marking with a pencil.

I then used painters tape (love that straight edge) and to tape across the frame from each mark. This isn't necessary but it is an extra measure (no pun intended) to make sure that the corners are all even.

I cut the tape and rolled the tape around the frame.

There was a lot of extra tape left over from taping across all corners so I used the extra to tape the rest of the frame that I didn't want painted.

Your prepped frame should look something like this.

Step 3: Paint your frames
I chose to use my leftover gold spray paint from my DIY West Elm inspired Curtain Rods which is Krylon Dual Paint + Primer in Gold Metallic.

Step 4: Stare in awe at an awesome DIY job well done!

I cannot believe how awesome this project turned out!

And just for fun here's another graphic to share!

  1. This is genius! I can't tell you how many times I've walked through target's gifting aisle (it's my happy place too) and seen these gorgeous bags only to think, "they're too pretty to give away..." Now I have a rhyme and reason to actually keep them! Thanks so much for sharing :) I'm definitely pinning and trying this at home! So glad I found your post on Tuesday Talk this week!
