DIY Diaper Box Storage

Friday, August 11, 2017

A few weeks ago, as I was folding up yet another diaper box to take out to the recycling bin, I thought to myself 'I wonder how I could up-cycle these boxes?'. You see, diaper boxes aren't flimsy, they are actually quite sturdy. They also happen to be a decent size to serve many different purposes. Much to my surprise (or maybe not so much), I was not the first person to have this idea. In fact, Pinterest is drowning in DBD (Diaper Box DIY). But that won't stop me! I'm joining the masses and turning an old diaper box into a functional storage bin!

When I decided to transform a diaper box I had a few rules in mind. First, it had to be cheap. Like less than $10 cheap. In my opinion, there is no point to DIY a diaper box and end up spending more than it would cost to simply purchase a new basket. Second rule, it had to be unique. All you have to do is google diaper box DIY (or DBD as I like to call it) and everyone and their mom has done it. So, while my idea is not completely unique the design had to be.

I have been seeing this compass design pop up everywhere but mostly on pillow covers so I thought it would be perfect to paint onto some linen fabric and pop in our new TV stand!

Let's get started!

Supplies you will need:

- Diaper Box
- Blank white paper
- Scotch Tape
- 1 yard of fabric
- Glue Gun (or fabric glue)
- Fabric Paint
- Small Paint Brush

The first thing I did was prep the diaper box by taping blank sheets of white paper to it. I did this to make sure that the bright colors on the box wouldn't show through the light linen fabric I had selected.

Next, I measured the fabric underneath the box in order to mark exactly where to cut it for it to wrap perfectly around the box. Sticking to my $10 budget I only bought 1 yard of fabric so I had to stick to the ol' "Measure twice, cut once" rule.

I started at the shorter ends of the box but wrapping the fabric up and over the box.

I then folded the fabric as shown below.

I first made sure everything lined up and then went back to glue the ends. I could have used fabric paint to adhere to the box but this glue gun worked fine for me!

After the fabric was glued to the box, I went back to glue all the ends together for a nice finish.

I'm a terrible blogger and forgot to take pictures while painting the compass design on this box (sorrrry). As you can see, it's not perfect and that is because I got a little impatient and free handed this part instead of tracing from a template (I also had run out of ink in the printer😁). I am not sure how much better this would have turned out even with a template since I chose to use a brush and fabric paint. If you have any sort of vinyl cutter- I suggest using that OR a fabric paint pen for more accuracy and straight lines. Either way, the design turned out 'rustic' 😜 so i'm okay with it.

Also, I apologize for the terrible picture quality! These were all snapped on my iphone!

I love how this turned out! It's not perfect- but for less than $10 I have a custom storage box that fits perfectly in our TV stand!

  1. This is one of the best diaper box coverings I've seen. It came out great and I love the way you've utilized it! I saw a similar basket on Amazon for $25 and this is way cheaper and practical!
    Great job!

  2. Cute idea! We are so over diapers (after third child) that I may have to make such a diaper-covered box just as an homage to these past eight years of having a kid in diapers!! Visiting from Tutorials and Tips.
