DIY Gold Foil Leaf Wall Art

Tuesday, August 11, 2015

I am sure everyone has seen these prints in some form or another by now that say 'Hello There Handsome' and 'Good Morning Gorgeous'. Well, I decided these would be the perfect addition to my master bedroom's gallery wall that I was creating. However, I searched and searched for prints to buy online and really could not find anything I liked (enter DIY goddess) so I made my own!

This project definitely wasn't without it's fair share of trial and error epic failures, which I have documented in this post. Overall, I am pleased with the final product and excited to share it with you!

Let's get started!

What you will need:
  • Access to Canva (if you aren't signed up.. sign up now!)
  • Cardstock
  • Liquid Gold Leaf
  • Small paint brush
  • Frames
Step 1: Design your print
I was turned on to an awesome website called Canva by my sister who is a web designer (check out her site here). Let me tell you Canva was a game changer for blogging graphics, etc! And it even came in handy with this project! I knew I wanted the font to all be the same so I played around for a bit until I was satisfied. I ended up using a font called 'Pacifico'.

I then printed these off on card stock to add some thickness to the prints.

Step 2: Create prints
I'm not really sure what step was next because I tried a couple different methods. I first thought that I would cut the words out with an exacto knife and then use them as a sort of template. Well, that was an epic failure. As you can see in the pictures below... I forgot that a lot of letters have holes in them that need to be there to determine what they are!

So onto method #2 which ended up working out. I simply started painting over the letters with the liquid gold leaf.

I used a very, VERY small brush and about an hour later it was done! (Lucky for me it started raining outside for that hour only [weird... I know] so this was such a relaxing DIY'ing moment)

Step 3: Frame your prints
Well, of course I couldn't find frames that I wanted to put these in... that would be too easy! So onto project #2. I found a couple of frames on sales at HL but they weren't the right color. A quick coat of primer and two coats of my favorite Krylon satin spray paint in 'Catalina Mist' and they were ready!

Epic failure #2... cutting myself while taking these frames apart! Ouch!

I have become quite the spray paint connoisseur :-)

Step 4: Hang your new beautiful artwork!
Aren't they pretty?!

These will eventually be part of my Master Bedroom's gallery wall... which is still very much a work in progress (so much so that I haven't even filled the frames) but here's a quick preview of how I'm thinking I will incorporate these beautiful prints!
