How To Make Anything Look Like Wood

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

You all know how I get on kicks. A few years ago I was on a sharpie kick- literally finding anything and everything I could makeover with a sharpie. Then, I was painting everything Revere Pewter. Well, now I'm making everything look like wood!

We are a little less than a month away from closing on a new-to-us house (more details on that to come) and I'd be lying if I said my anxiety wasn't at an all time high. Not only is there so much to do when it comes to moving but I've also been at a complete stand still when it comes to DIY projects and it is very hard for me to sit still so I've been trying to find little projects here and there to keep myself busy.

I have to give a shout out to my girl Laura @threesonsfarmhosue from Instagram who I saw use this technique on a pair of lamps. She is to blame for the faux wood madness happening in this house!

It all started when I decided to give our ceiling fan a modern farmhouse update. Once I realized this whole technique of making things look like wood actually worked the wheels started to turn on what else I could transform.

We recently gave our guest bedroom a makeover which left this little nightstand on it's way to goodwill. Luckily, this little guy was saved by my craving for a new project. You will not believe how it looks now!

The first thing I did was give this nightstand a good clean and a quick coat of Fusion Mineral Paint in Bedford. I chose this color so it wasn't a stark white. I also made sure that it was an uneven coat to leave some of the black showing a bit.

Once the paint was dry I simply used a dry brush method of applying this Valspar Antiquing Wax. A dry brush method simply means wetting your brush and dabbing off the excess.

I made sure that I applied more wax in some areas and less in others to give it the look of real stained wood.

The last thing I did was give the existing knobs a quick makeover using Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black (you guys- I literally use this paint on everything!!).

And just like that a piece that was on it's way to the curb is fresh, new, on trend piece! Here is how the table looks now in it's new home, our office.

I absolutely love how this table looks now and it was so easy to do! Any ideas what my next victim should be? Share with me in the comments below!

Don't forget to pin for later!

As always, Thank you for visiting R&R at home!

    1. Thank you!! I actually did not use a top coat since I used Fusion as the base and the antiquing wax to give it this look!

  5. I love the simplicity of this technique! I’ve been looking for something like, so excited I found your post! Did you wipe the wax after applying or did you just apply and leave it?

    1. Hi Caitlin- Thank you! I simply let the wax dry once it was applied, no wiping!
