DIY- 10 Minute Terrarium

Sunday, June 28, 2015

It did not take me long to fall in love with all things succulents. As soon as they became a trend I just had to have 'em. Well, it has been well over a year since this trend popped up on my radar and I am just now getting to this project! The sad part... it honestly took about 10 minutes to put together (not including travel time to the store of course).

Why did it take me so long? I was put off by other bloggers because I was worried it would take a long time (not really sure why) and I was going back and forth on whether or not I wanted my terrarium to be real or faux. After some research I realized that much like the other 'plant life' in my home... I wanted to go faux. The main reason? I have a black thumb (it's true).

Similar to my last post, I was inspired to get this done after receiving my beautiful terrarium from my brother for my birthday (Thanks M!). So, this is another birthday gift inspiration post!

Let's get started!

What you will need:
  • Terrarium planter
  • Decorative Filler
  • Faux succulents

Where to buy: I was gifted my terrarium. But it can be found here from World Market. It comes in multiple sizes. The one shown above is the 'medium' size. All other items were purchased at Michaels. I was lucky to hit the store on a day that all of their 'Garden Collection' was 60% off. So my total for this project? $30.

Step 1: Fill your planter

I chose my filler to be two tones of river rocks to create the illusion of soil on the bottom. I started by spreading the black river rocks on the bottom. For this step I only needed one 28 oz. bag.

I then added a second layer of multi-colored river rocks. For this step I used 2 28 oz. bags. But, as you can see my planter gets larger in the middle. So this step will depend on the type of planter you choose.

Step 2: Arrange succulents

I then began adding my succulents one at a time. I really used no method other than placing them where I liked them.

Step 3: Enjoy your new terrarium!

Voila! In (less than) 10 minutes you have created a beautiful faux terrarium!

I think it is the perfect addition to our home!
