$100 Room Makeover Challenge- Week 3

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Welcome to Week 3 of the $100 Room Makeover Challenge hosted by Erin at Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry! In case you missed it here are Week 1 and Week 2 of this challenge!

I am beyond excited to share this week's progress because it was a true 'R&R' project (check out my About page for more info on the inspiration for my blog name)! This week I am sharing how we made magnetic bamboo blinds to add to the back door in our mudroom! I know, I know. This isn't the first time a shade has been added to a door but I was faced with some tough challenges and overcame each one by not being afraid to be innovative!

So, let's start with the first challenge [which should be obvious] and that is that we are on a budget! And a strict one at that! I didn't want to spend any more than $20 to add this shade to the door and have you checked pricing on custom blinds? They are NOT cheap! Even your average bamboo shade from any big box store in a custom(ish) size is at least $30 (and Home Depot stopped carrying these in store- at least here in the Chicago suburbs). So, I had to get creative. I chose to purchase these from Lowe's that come in only 3 sizes and Lowe's will NOT cut them down. So, I got home and realized they were way too big for our door (see image below).

Sorry for the terrible picture quality!
If you follow me on Instagram, then you may have already watched this whole debacle unfold. I got a lot of feedback NOT to try and cut these blinds myself. Then, I googled it and saw a couple of other bloggers had already tried it so I said, LET'S DO THIS! And, at the end of the day, these blinds were $15 so I figured I wasn't losing much by experimenting.

It really was not as crazy hard as I was expecting. We simple rolled the blinds up as tight as we could and wrapped them in painters tap smack dab in the middle of where we planned to cut. Then, we used a regular ol' hack saw to cut these down. Shout out to my hubby (the patient one) who took his time cutting these down- he did a great job! Really, you guys, it was that simple! A little patience and determination really goes a long way!

The next thing I did was cut down the string. I really had no need for these blinds to be the length of the entire door (still contemplating if I should just cut the entire bottom section) and this string was so crazy long so I simply cut it and tied new knots on the new ends.

The last part is my FAVORITE part! One of the biggest challenges for me was not wanting to drill holes in the door to hang these... I move past certain trends very quickly so I was not willing to commit to these blinds forever. So, I wanted to find a temporary solution. I thought, surely there has to be a way to hang these with magnets. Yup. Super easy, y'all! I picked up these heavy duty magnets with hooks on them for about $2.50 a piece, painted them the same color as the door and voila. Magnetic blinds!

From afar you can barely tell they are being held up by MAGNETS!

Best part of this whole project? It was $20 from start to finish! And I am so so SO proud!

I wish I could show you how it looks from farther back but I'll be back next week with the final reveal! I cannot wait! Until then, check out all of the other bloggers completing this challenge!

  1. That looks great! We recently had to get a blind for a window -- a custom blind for a tiny window would have cost $80!! No thanks. So we got creative with an old shutter. Also, I have decor commitment issues too! Ha ha! I like to change stuff up without breaking the bank.

  2. I am so in love with the way that you went with the flow of things! I am pretty consistently trying things I'm told not to. Glad to have found a kindred soul. You should be proud because these shades look great. Also, I had no idea that they even made magnets with hooks on them. Genius!
