$100 Room Makeover Challenge- Week 2

Thursday, September 14, 2017

So, I made it official and joined an amazing group of bloggers to complete the $100 Room Makeover Challenge (check out all of the other bloggers linked at the bottom of this post). This challenge is hosted by Erin at Lemons, Lavender and Laundry. Every Wednesday I will be back with updates on how the room makeover is going. If you missed Week 1 of this challenge you can check it out here!

Since I already posted pictures of the new color on the walls I am using week 2 to share a tutorial on painting a door! I am the worst blogger ever and forgot to take 'during' pictures- so I am sharing Sherwin Williams' tutorial instead! (No, I am not sponsored!)

Paint a Front Door- Sherwin Williams

My supplies list for this project is pretty short; Paint, Paint Brush, Artist Brush and Painters Tape. I used a regular old paint brush for this project because in a $100 challenge EVERY penny counts so I wanted to use what I had. I also ended up changing the type of paint I used last minute to Sherwin Williams 'Iron Ore'. When picking my paint I literally just tried to find the least expensive semi-gloss that I could find. They recommend using a high gloss on doors (especially if it will be outside) but since this will be inside I didn't want it to be too shiny so I decided on a semi-gloss.

The first thing you will want to paint on a door are the 'bevels' (see image above for more details). Most doors will have 4-6 bevel sections to paint. Let these dry before moving on to the every other section of the door. I know it may not seem like it but this is key. Especially if you are using a brush because brush marks will show a tiny bit so you want them to look uniform. Instead of bevels on the top of my door I have windows so this is where I busted out my artist brush to paint each individual ledge.

Now that the painting is complete in this room it's on to adding the final details! Currently working on figuring out a way to add a bamboo shade to this door without drilling holes (and don't forget we're working with $100 here!).

Here is a quick recap of how the room has been transformed so far...

 'Before' picture!

After painting the walls!

After painting the door!
This next phase is going to be the most fun- because this is where I get to be crafty and creative and style this room!

Here is my updated 'To Do' list for this challenge:
  • Paint Walls (Sherwin Williams 'Passive') FREE, already had from my Powder Room Makeover
  • Paint Door (Sherwin Williams 'Iron Ore') $11.00 (rounded up), already had brushes and painters tape
  • Add bamboo shade to door
  • Change out light fixture
  • Add durable rug
  • Add decor- wall art? baskets?
I'll be back next week with more updates for you! In the meantime, check out all of the amazing bloggers in this challenge!

As always, thank you for visiting R&R at home!

  5. There are magnetic hangers for doors, but I'm not sure that they're strong enough to hold bamboo. The metal screws are pretty cheap though. Good luck! Your door looks lovely so far!

    1. Hi Erin! Thank you for stopping by! I have been wanting to paint a door for so long and FINALLY just decided to do it! It took some getting used to it but I love it! I WISH we could have done our front door but we do not have enough light in that space :(

  8. This looks amazing so far!! The whole room looks entirely different just by painting walls and the door. And I love your advice on the door painting. I've never painted doors before, but I'll definitely remember your tip to let the beveled areas dry completely before moving on. Can't wait to see the rest of your room!
