$100 Room Challenge Week 3: Light Fixture Update

Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Leave it to me to have an idea of something I want in my head that doesn't exist. I feel like this has been the story of my life. I set out to look for a very specific item and it's nowhere to be found- and if it is found the price is outrageous. That is exactly what happened when I set out to DIY this light fixture.

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Reveal

As I was designing my vision board for this powder room makeover I came across this light fixture and fell in love.

Amazon Progress Lighting Hansford Collection

Let's take a look at the original light fixture in this room. Totally not the style I was going for. Even paint could not save this light (but it is currently for sale for a deal on Marketplace if you're local and interested 😉).

So, I found a very simple two light vanity fixture on Marketplace for $20 and set out to DIY my own. The problem? Glass globe pendant shades with a 2 1/4 " fitter do not seem to exist. Plan B was finding a large glass lightbulb instead. Those don't exist either, ha! Joke's on me.

This happens a lot in the world of DIY. You're knee deep in a project and realize that you have to shift plans. After literal hours spent researching light fixtures and bulb fitters and light bulbs I decided I needed to formulate a new plan for this light.

What you will need:
  • Plain light fixture- I recommend checking your local GoodWill or FB Marketplace
  • Black Spray Paint
  • Glass Vanity Shades of your choice- You can find these at most hardware stores like Menards, Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace, etc.
I knew I wanted to paint this fixture black so I started there. I gave this light a couple quick coats of black spray paint in satin.

I also made sure to spray the accessories to this fixture so that everything was black.

Then, I set out to find replacement shades that went with the look I was going for. I found these bell shaped glass covers at Menards for $6 a piece. I wasn't sold on them at first but after living with them a few days I really fell in love with their unique look. Tip: It is so easy to change out light shades to give your fixtures a brand new look! Most of them simply screw off!

As the cherry on top, I picked up some of these edison style LED light bulbs. Since I had clear glass shades on this light I thought these were a nice touch.

So, for around $40 I had a brand new light fixture that went with my Modern Farmhouse theme! Sure, I could have bought one new for around the same price (something I realized after I had purchase this fixture used) but sometimes it feels good to recycle... at least that is what I am telling myself! 😂

I also gave this old mirror a facelift using my 'make anything look like wood' treatment!

I love how this room is coming together! And I am proud that I didn't give up on this light fixture (if you follow along on Instagram then you know this was definitely a saga when it came to installing this light).

Pin for later!

Here's an update to the to-do list/budget:

  • Paint Room- $22 (with the $10 mail in rebate on 1 gallon of paint)
  • Paint Vanity- FREE (had the paint)
  • Hand Painted Wallpaper- $3 for paint sample
