Trash to Treasure Tuesday- Dresser Makeover

Tuesday, October 10, 2017

This post is sponsored by Fusion Mineral Paint but all thoughts and opinions are my own!

You guys! I am so excited to be sharing my first ever official Trash to Treasure Transformation (oh my gosh the alliteration!). Not only is this the first time I am officially posting this type of project it is also my first time ever using a chalk like paint! Shocking, I know! Isn't it like a rite of passage for all bloggers to paint something with chalk paint? Well I guess I've officially made it then, folks! Ha. Not quite!
[Side note: Fusion Mineral Paint is NOT a chalk paint but does have the matte finish of a chalk paint with no required top coat!]

So, the truth is that when I set out to complete my first project using Fusion Mineral Paint I was supposed to be painting a completely different dresser but the SAME day that I found out Fusion wanted to work with me on this project I found this beautiful dresser on the curb at the end of our block! It was a sign and I saw it and it opened up my eyes, I saw the sign... okay I'll stop. Anyway, my amazing husband put this dresser in the back of his truck, and drove the 200 feet to bring it home to me!

Now, being the absolutely amazing blogger that I am I totally took a before picture. Oh wait. No, I didn't. Le sigh. I am so sorry! Thankfully, I have some amazing Instagram story watchers who suggested I snap a quick screenshot of the video I had taken so I did just that!

This is the dresser before...

So sorry for the terrible picture quality!
This is the dresser now!

I wasn't sure how to go about this blog post because the blogging world is FULL of tutorials on how to paint furniture so while I'll be explaining each step I'm going to make this post more about how amazing this paint is for a beginner like myself!

Let's get started!

What you will need:

- All purpose cleaner (I chose to use Simple Green)
- Rag (for cleaning)
- Paint Brush
- Artists Brush (For those small details)
- 1 pint Fusion Mineral Paint

The first thing you will want to do is clean off the piece you are painting. This was literally the only prep I did to my piece. More advanced furniture painters may be shaking their head and wagging their finger at me right now but let's remember I am a beginner.. and from the research I had done, this was kind of the benefit of using this type of paint- little prep required! In hindsight, I wish I would have done a light sanding to the top of this dresser but it still turned out great.

After wiping the piece down, I went all in and started painting! I was amazed absolutely amazed at the coverage! I gave this piece three coats on the top and two coats on the rest! And there is still half of the pint left!

One of the reasons I chose to use Fusion Mineral Paint is because it does not require a top coat! Again, this may be something that seasoned painters may argue with me about but I assure you it is their 'claim to fame' if you will. Check our their site to learn more!

How beautiful are these knobs? They are pretty much the reason I wanted to pull this out of my neighbor's trash! I think they are beautiful just the way they are!

I have been terrified to attempt to distress this piece. Technially, that is the look I am going for but I have no idea where to start! So, I suppose we will consider this 'Phase 1' until I can muster up the courage to take sand paper to this piece! I may just have to close my eyes and do it!

For the cherry on top of this transformation I decided to add some contact paper to the inside of the drawers! I was honestly just strolling through target and spotted this paper and thought it would be the perfect way to complete the look!

To start, I simply measured the inside of each drawer (which suprisingly were not all exactly the same).

Then, I cut the contact paper to the measurements! Luckily, this stuff comes with a grid on the back of it for easy measuring!

Then, I simply placed the contact paper inside the drawer!

I think it adds a wonderful little surprise to this piece when you open the drawer!

I absolutely love how this turned out! And I will definitely be using Fusion Mineral Paint for all of my paint needs moving forward! They just introduced a new color and now I'm scouring every piece of furniture in my house wondering what will be my next chalk paint victim.

I would love for you to share your favorite paint makeovers with me! Link them in the comments below!

    1. Hi! You are correct, this is NOT a chalk paint. However, it is very similar to a chalk paint, with a matte finish and no need for a top coat. Thanks for stopping by!
