One Room Challenge Week 4: DIY Towel Rack

Thursday, April 26, 2018

I feel like I should start this post with 'womp wompppppp' because I fully intended on bringing you a Faux Shiplap tutorial but life happened and we weren't able to complete our shiplap wall in time. I also did not want to rush this process because rushing can lead to mistakes and this is one wall I don't want to mess up! So, I'm bringing you a tutorial on how to make a Farmhouse style towel rack!
I have been frequenting the aisles of Hobby Lobby recently and on my last visit I noticed a very Farmhousy looking hook rack. It was originally listed for over $60 but happened to be 1/2 off that week making it closer to $30. I still felt like I could make this for even less so I set out to DIY it. This is such a fun and simple DIY project for every level of DIY'er!

Let's get started!

What you will need (this post may contain affiliate links- you can read my full disclosure here):
I was lucky to stumble upon these pre-cut common boards for less than $3 a piece at Menards. They seemed to be about the perfect size so I went ahead and picked on up!

The first thing I did was give this piece a quick sanding around all of the edges.

Once the piece was sanded I stained it using 'Dark Walnut' by Minwax.

I used a sponge brush to apply the stain and wiped away excess with a paper towel.

Once the stain had dried I added one coat of polyurethane in satin.

Once the stain and protective coat had set I began to measure where I would be placing each hook. I had five hooks to I made sure the first was center and then measured the outer two two inches in from each side and finally centered the final two based on the others (I hope that makes sense!).

I drilled holes for each hook (four for each of these) and then simply screwed each hook by hand (I found this easier than the drill).

Once the hooks were in place I added the hanging hardware. I made sure to measure five inches from each side and about once inch down from the top.

One the hardware was on it was time to hang this beauty!

I love how this turned out!

This piece is so versatile! You could use it practically anywhere! It would look great in an entryway or mudroom!

Be sure to check out all of the Featured Designers and Guest Participants who are completing the One Room Challenge! Check back next week for a DIY Shiplap Tutorial and again in two weeks for the full bathroom reveal!

As always, Thank you for visiting R&R at home!

  1. I love this DIY! I was actually looking at a really similar one but didn't want to shell out $80 for one...maybe I'll make it myself now :) I'm also tackling a bathroom for ORC this year-trying to finish up fast! Looking forward to seeing your final look! Kristin @ Postbox Designs
