$100 Room Challenge Week 1: Mood Board

Wednesday, January 6, 2021

Well hello there! R&R here. I felt it was time to dust off the old bloggy blog! After a very long, unplanned hiatus I am back with one of my favorite challenges- The $100 Room Challenge!

Before I jump into things I want to apologize for my absence. I don't think I published one post in 2020 and that feels kind of fitting for the times (other than my recap of a year in our new house). While we have been in the middle of a global pandemic, I was also pregnant for the first half of 2020 and then on what we call 'maternity leave' wink wink.

We were thrilled to welcome our rainbow baby, Henry Michael, on July 15th, 2020. He sure was a bright spot in the midst of a crazy year. I do plan to officially blog Henry's birth story at some point because it was the most amazing experience and I want to have it saved in a space.

Anyway, let's get to the challenge!

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Reveal

If you are new to this challenge here are the rules; You have one month to makeover one space with a budget of $100. This budget must include everything- from items that were gifted, sponsored, etc to make it as fair/honest as possible. Here are a few of the challenges I have completed in the past; Powder Room #1, Powder Room #2, MudroomMaster Bedroom, Office. I always have so much fun making over spaces on a budget!

I am so excited about this month's challenge because I am going to be taking on a completely new type of space- my master closet!

When I first decided to join the challenge this go-round, I had no idea what space to complete. There isn't a room in our house that necessarily needed a makeover. Then, I realized just how much my closet needed a makeover not only for the prettiness factor but also for functionality.

Pretty quickly into the planning stages of this closet, I realized just how much a closet makeover normally costs... 😮 a lot. Of course, my goal was not to exceed $100. While scouring Pinterest and Google for image inspiration I came across a couple makeovers that used the iconic Ikea Billy Bookcase in place of more expensive closet organizers. I thought this was genius and immediately got to work planning my entire makeover around this bookcase.

If you follow along on Instagram then you know I have been prepping and planning for this makeover for a little bit now. I know, I know... the challenge is supposed to be done during the month of January but sometimes budget makeovers take a bit planning. I am sure glad I started early because there are a few items I needed for this makeover that I found on FB Marketplace (and would have been gone fast) and another item that was clutch from Ikea that has been out of stock forever and I happened to find ONE in my area (more on that funny story later).

Let's take a quick look at the before of this space.

It's pretty much a disaster. I have a door that isn't even attached anymore after painting trim. Baskets full of clothes because they have nowhere else to go. Shoes on random racks. Oh, and a random woody on the floor (#momlife). Yup, a true disaster that I cannot believe I am sharing with the world. 🙈

This week I want to focus on my vision for this space. While my biggest goal is to create a more functional closet I also want to make a space that feel pretty (you know... like a closet Carrie Bradshaw would be proud of).

Here is my vision for this space.

The first thing I am going to need to do is paint all the things; the walls, the ceiling, the shelves, the brackets holding the shelves.... like I said, allllll the things.

As I mentioned earlier, I am going to be focusing the design of this closet around the addition of a billy bookcase to use for clothes/shoe storage.

The next thing I am going to do is focus on finding a way to rearrange the shelves I have in a more functional way. I don't have a ton of clothes that need to be hung up so I'd like to have one side be for shirts/sweaters and the other for dresses.

Lastly, I am going to organize organize organize!

And if you can believe it, I already have a sneak peek for you- I was busy this week painting to create a blank slate for this space! Here is the progress I have made so far!

I know it seems like most of the work is done but I promise I still have a ton to share- like finding a way to makeover this light fixture (can you call a light bulb a light fixture, ha), a fun hand-painted accent wall, and a few other fun things so stay tuned!
